Every year at this time racing fans turn their thoughts to finding the next champion, a new hero to lift the
Sport of Kings onto the front pages of the paper - at least for the six weeks it takes to complete the Triple Crown. Last year,
Big Brown captivated the American public with his powerful win in the Derby and now stands at stud at Three Chimneys farm in Kentucky.
Big Brown is undoubtedly one of the lucky ones. By now, many are familiar with the story of
Ferdinand who won the Kentucky Derby in 1986 and accomplished co-star of the great battles with another Derby champion
Alysheba. While
Alysheba was recently returned to his Kentucky home,
Ferdinand ended up a victim of horse slaughter in Japan. You can read Ray Paulick's version of the story
here.Ferdinand Winning the 1986 Kentucky Derby

Keith, thanks for posting this. I am looking forward to seeing what type of entries we get!
Thanks very much for publicizing this initiative. Another outstanding group to support is Indianapolis-based Friends of Ferdinand (www.friendsofferdinand.org), a volunteer group that transitions thoroughbreds from the track into second careers and forever homes. Friends of Ferdinand recently received a grant from The Tony Stewart Foundation - following is the link to a segment that ran on Indy's WXIN-TV/Fox 59 this past Mon evening, part of the station's coverage leading to this weekend's Daytona 500: http://www.fox59.com/pages/video/?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=3429682
Thanks Alex and Sally.
I will be watching this video contest in earnest.
Sally, thank you for the link. I will be sure to link to Friends of Ferdinand in future posts.
Cheers
Keith
