Canadian jockey Kelsi Kelso Purcell, born in Kamloops BC and riding at Sunland Park, was seriously hurt in Saturday's first race after her mount Stone Cat All Lit Up clipped heels in the 87oyd quarterhorse race.

Purcell is in hospital recovering from shattered vertebrae. While various posters on message boards and Facebook indicate there is no paralysis, full details of Purcell's condition have yet to be reported in any official manner.

A Facebook group is being organized to help raise funds for Purcell. When details are made clear, I'll set up a link to the page for those that wish to donate.

You can read an archived interview with Purcell at FemaleJockeys.Com.

Chiefswood Stable's Lomaki was an impressive winner of the Endeavour Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday sneaking in from the list of also-eligibles. The Eric Coatrieux-trained mare stalked Cure for Sale from fifth position and then swooped during the stretch run to win going away by some two lengths.

As the First Saturday In May approaches, each weekend provides a new Derby Contender. On Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, RULE proved to be a solid contender when leading throughout in the G1 Sam F. Davis Stakes putting away the popular Uptowncharlybrown.

The Roman Ruler colt previously ruled the G3 Delta Jackpot and is potentially headed to the G1 Florida Derby for a final Derby prep.

Caracortado knocked off a pair of Derby contenders - Tiz Chrome and American Lion - to win the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Antia. The California bred gelding stalked the above pair throughout from an inside position before tipping out turning into the stretch to overtake the duo for a comfortable win. Dave in Dixie closed well late for the place over American Lion.
