Upcoming Stakes Weekend To Feature Plenty of Woodbine Talent

Rahy's Attorney, winner of the G1 Woodbine Mile in 2008, takes on a tough field of turf veterans on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. Jockey Rob Landry gets the call on the now six-year-old Crown Attorney gelding.

Courageous Cat and Le Grand Cru will offer stiff competition in the Canadian Stakes. Racing fans will remember Courageous Cat nearly defeating Goldikova in the Breeders's Cup Turf Mile last November.

Landry has several mounts on the card including Chiefswood Stables Macallan for an MSW and will also ride Meadow Saffron in the Honey Stakes.

Saturday's Gulfstream Card has multiple features including the Hutcheson Stakes where three-year-olds D'Funnybone and Radiohead will sprint seven furlongs with the winner being considered for the Derby.

The headliner Fountain of Youth Stakes features established Derby contenders Aikenite, Buddy's Saint, Jackson Bend and Eskerendaya. (I put a small wager on Aikenite and Jackson Bend in the Derby Futures pool and will be following this event closely.)

It's a great card for serious handicappers. Best of luck to Ian Black and the Rahy's Attorney crew in the Canadian Turf Stakes.

Queen's Plate contender Big Red Mike worked 3F in 36.90 on dirt at Palm Meadows on Feb 18/10. I have been busy updating the Queen's Plate contenders page with all the recent workouts and results and will update the standings on Monday.

D's Wando is one of several 2010 Queen's Plate contenders

Lentenor, brother to Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, finished second as the odds-on favourite in an allowance turf race at Gulfstream on Wednesday.

Lenenor pressed a slow pace throughout the 1M1/8 race and appeared to do enough to win only for Doubles Partner to squeeze through along the rail in the final strides to take the prize.

Lentenor holds on for place

Keith, did you speak to Josie about Careless Jewel? Any clue what's on her agenda?

Keith, I didn't know if you knew this, but 3yo colt Odysseus who posted an excellent 15-length (near track record) allowance win at Tampa Bay on Wednesday (and is on my top 10 Derby contenders list) has a connection to a horse I remember you liked last year: Keino West. Odysseus' 1/2 sister is Vanetta Hill, Keino West's dam. Frankly, that's one element that fascinated me about him early on.
