So sour were the conditions that following Southdale's win Woodbine cancelled the remainder of the card.
Given the inclement weather, this was not a day to interview connections following the race so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Race 5 featured fourteen horses in a 1M 1/6 $68K MSW Allowance event. The field is littered with Queen's Plate contenders including Mobilizer, Vicar Street, Captain Canuck and Cognashene.

The seventh, and final race of the day, featured a speedy field of nine in a six furlong sprint. Daniel Be Good knocked off ridiculously fast fractions of 21.61, 43.67 and 55.89 before Southdale would take over to lead them to the wire in a time of 1:08.59 narrowly missing the track record of 1:08.31 set in 2008 by Legal Move.

Thus ended a satisfying, though downright freezing, day of racing at Woodbine and we learned a few things along the way:
1. Giant's Tomb may need a bit more time and distance to show his best.
2. Mobilizer is one gutsy horse getting caught in the stretch and then fighting back to win when all seemed lost.
3. Hotep is for real. His final time was much better than that of the Mobilizer race and the Sam-Son horse was not working hard to win.
4. Good things come to those who wait. While the Ferguson family missed out on last year's Queen's Plate, their patience to get Southdale back to the track at his peak form paid off on this day and his strong gallop out suggests that there is a bright future ahead for four year-old Southdale.

Sunday brings another set of speedsters to the Woodbine track as Fatal Bullet and Hollywood Hit attempt to obliterate the track record in the seven furlong Vigil Stakes. Pack a parka, wear a scarf and don't blink or you might miss the fastest race of the year.

alphabet soup. looks like dad
Ghostzapper - You are correct. If I didn't know better I'd have thought that WAS Alphabet Soup. Uncanny resemblance.
Drop me a line and I'll see about getting you a prize (perhaps something cold and refreshing) that isn't an Adena hat as I suspect you already have a few!!
Cheers
Keith
haha sounds great. probably headin down to watch hollinger have his fun with the rest of em in the Queenston. hurt my eyes to see you didn t toss mobilizer on your QPFC team.. You'd have to think the Queen will be rooting for him in the Queens Plate seeing as Motivator stands at Royal Stud (owned by the britsh royal family)
Thanks for the pictures! Shame it couldn't have been a nicer day for you guys, but at least the racing was great. I was very pleased with Mobilizer's race-- gutty little horse, isn't he-- and thought the time was favorable in comparison to the stake, given the level of the race and his inexperience. Reason for optimism, I think.
14 horse fields ae tougher to navigate then 5 horse fields as well. May have had something to do with the time.
Great stuff as always Keith, nice call on Southdale, I was 3 for 3 on the pick six with both Amazon Belle and Exclusive love before they cancelled races. Such a shame.
