Sunday's undercard also has two additional turf Stakes events. The G2 Canadian Stakes and the G1 Northern Dancer Stakes.
The Northern Dancer is a particularly competitive mile and a half event as locals Marlang and Marchfield will bang heads with veteran turf warriors Champs Elysees, Just As Well, Marsh Side and Quijano. Musketier, Medjool, Cobotown Ron and Solitaire round out a tough ten-horse field.
Mike Matz sends out Princess Haya in the Canadian Stakes to take on the brilliant five-year-old mare Forever Together and Ontario-bred Dance to My Tune in a difficult seven horse field. Much Obliged, She's The Umpire, Points of Grace and Lomaki round out the group who will travel a mile and an eighth on the E.P Taylor turf course.
Champs Elysees was busy digging for carrots when I stopped by this morning. On Sunday, the champ hopes to be dining on a floral blanket.
A host of ship-in trainers will be represented this weekend including Linda Rice, Todd Pletcher, Wes Ward, Ken McPeek, Peter Schiergen and Robert Frankel.
Bay to Bay will be trying the Natalma Stakes
As well, we'll see an influx of import jockeys such as Julien Leparoux, Rafael Bejerano, Chris DeCarlo, Alan Garcia, Andrasch Starke and Garrett Gomez.
The photogenic Ginger Brew lives next door to Ventura currently under the care of Brian Lynch at Woodbine
It will be interesting to watch our local Woodbine talent match up against some very tough competition shipping in from across the continent and overseas.
I'll be posting more photos and a few picks for the events over the course of the weekend. For more photos, news and video be sure to check out the official Woodbine Mile website.
