Embur's Song breaks her maiden magnificently
Of particular note is the Woodbine debut of Embur's Song, the Unbridled's Song filly who romped on the Keeneland polytrack on April 17th by more than 13 lengths. The Todd Pletcher trained prodigy is entered in Saturday's third race at Woodbine and it is worth noting the horse has been supplemented to the Queen's Plate. While Embur's Song proved plenty sprinting at seven furlongs in that opener, it will be interesting to see if she can maintain her speed over two-turns in this 1M 1/16 race against older company including the capable Gore Bay and Ima Soul Miss. Saturday's card features Queen's Plate contenders Grittani and Kid Canuck in race four. Grittani has been training well and won his debut on April 16th. Kid Canuck finished second last out on May 9th. That pair are joined by fellow Ontario-breds Boadini and R Shining Hope in this six furlong turf sprint. To see the entries, please CLICK HERE.

Way out on the west coast on Saturday at Hollywood Park, three year-old Ontario-bred Dixie Trouper will contest the Lazaro Barrera Memorial S. (Grade III) going seven furlongs on the All Weather track. The Tarabilla Farms, Inc. charge is trained by D.E Hofmans and will be ridden by Joe Talamo.
The eighth race on Sunday's card will go a long way to clearing up the abilities of a bevy of Queen's Plate contenders as five Ontario breds route a mile and a sixteenth in an open allowance event. Roger Attfield's Mobilizer, who rallied to win impressively last out at Woodbine, leads the quintet. Also entered are Artic Fern, Roman Games, Who We Gunna Call and Bear Star.
Mobilizer hopes to add to his credentials on Sunday
Artic Fern defeated the well regarded Dark Cloud Dancer on April 17th for trainer Mike Keogh. Roman Games has been training up to this race following a fourth place finish in his 2010 debut. Sunday's feature is the mile and a sixteenth La Lorgnette Stakes. The race features Reade Baker's fast filly Biofuel and the Roger Attfield trained Ernfold. Those readers who are enjoying the NHL playoffs might be interested in placing a hunch bet on Moment of Majesty who is owned by former NHL goalkeeper Curtis Joseph.

The Globe & Mail has reported that the Queen will be in attendance for the 2010 Queen's Plate held on Sunday July 4th. From the report entitled The Queen’s tour: Canada Day address, off to the races, a royal visit to RIM:
On July 4, the royal couple will be off to the races for the 151st running of the $1-million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack. The Queen has a particular love of thoroughbred racing and is an owner and breeder of racehorses in England. The Queen’s Plate is normally run on the final Sunday of June, but the track moved the date of the race a week later, partly to accommodate a visit from the Queen.
She has already attended three runnings of the Queen’s Plate, named after her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. Her Majesty has attended Queen’s Plates in 1959, 1973 and 1997. Thirteen years ago, Queen Elizabeth presented the winning trophy to Canadian industrialist Frank Stronach, after his Awesome Again won the race.

The issue of horse slaughter was raised in a CBC News Report this past week which included grisly video of horse abuse at the abattoirs of Bouvry Exports in Fort MacLeod, Alta., and Richelieu Meats in Massueville, Que. The following excerpt is taken from a CBC story entitled Horse slaughter rules violated, video shows:
Too many horses slipped or fell in the moments before being shot and too many were whipped or shocked with electric prods, according to independent audits based on the footage.
As well, the hidden-camera video doesn't show anyone checking the horses to ensure they're unconscious before they're strung up to have their throats slit. If they were still awake, it would violate federal regulations.
In one scene, a horse writhes in agony after it's shot in the face with a .22 rifle, then continues to squirm after a second shot to the head. It finally collapses 20 seconds later when the slaughterer, dressed in blue coveralls and a baseball cap, reloads and fires a third round into its head.
It is not an easy read but I challenge readers to take the time to read this story and also watch the accompanying video. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency plan to resolve the issue by installing cameras in abattoirs, however, the film is not yet being monitored independently as the agency does not have the legal authority to make them mandatory. Embur's Song looked good this afternoon.
I will confess that I was surprised to see Mobilizer wheeled back in 15 days, but only because of Attfield's report that he came out of the last race with some mucus.

Embur's Song was in fine form...and the speed missing with the absence of Resentless is returned.
Mobilizer could use another race as he's pretty young on experience compared to other Plate contenders. I look forward to seeing what he can do this afternoon.
